{"id":40,"date":"2009-12-02T17:14:11","date_gmt":"2009-12-02T21:14:11","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.dennis-farms.com\/?page_id=40"},"modified":"2009-12-07T06:36:02","modified_gmt":"2009-12-07T10:36:02","slug":"grassfed-pork","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.dennis-farms.com\/?page_id=40","title":{"rendered":"Pastured Pork"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.dennis-farms.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/12\/IMG_1706.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" style=\"border-right-width: 0px; margin: 0px 10px 0px 0px; display: inline; border-top-width: 0px; border-bottom-width: 0px; border-left-width: 0px\" title=\"IMG_1706\" border=\"0\" alt=\"IMG_1706\" align=\"left\" src=\"\/\/www.dennis-farms.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/12\/IMG_1706_thumb.jpg\" width=\"183\" height=\"138\" \/><\/a> Our pastured pork comes from Tamworth pigs.&#160; We chose the Tamworth breed for several reasons.&#160; Tamworth\u2019s are a heritage breed and we liked the idea of raising a breed from the past that had not been genetically \u201cimproved\u201d to do well in confinement.<\/p>\n<p>Swine breeds can be categorized into two main types: lard type or bacon type.&#160; Tamworth\u2019s are bacon type hogs which have a leaner meat than lard types.&#160; The Tamworth originated in Ireland where it was known as the Irish Grazer for its natural inclination to graze grass \u2013 exactly what a grass farm needs.&#160; Tamworth\u2019s are red in color so they don\u2019t sunburn as easily as a white pig and have more heat tolerance than a black pig.&#160; And most importantly, the Tamworth has the reputation for producing excellent tasting meat. <\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.dennis-farms.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/12\/AmbersNewBabies22.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" style=\"border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; margin: 5px 0px 0px 10px; display: inline; border-top: 0px; border-right: 0px\" title=\"Amber&#39;s New Babies 2\" border=\"0\" alt=\"Amber&#39;s New Babies 2\" align=\"right\" src=\"\/\/www.dennis-farms.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/12\/AmbersNewBabies2_thumb2.jpg\" width=\"197\" height=\"149\" \/><\/a>We raise our pigs in a natural, pastoral environment.&#160; They co-graze the pastures with the&#160; cows and sheep and have access to woods for shade and shelter.&#160; While grazing makes up a significant part of their diet, since they are omnivores and not ruminants, we provide them with a supplemental ration of feed (ground corn, soybean meal, vitamins and minerals).&#160; We do not use farrowing crates.&#160; Our sows farrow out in the pasture in nests we build for them in a sheltered area.&#160; This gives the baby pigs immediate access to fresh air and sunshine and they quickly learn from mama that grass is good. <\/p>\n<p>Our pastured pork not only tastes great, but it is much healthier than grocery store pork.&#160; It is lower in total fat, has a healthier Omega-3 to Omega-6 ratio, and more Vitamin A and Vitamin E.&#160; We are currently offering our whole hog sausage.&#160; And we don\u2019t cheat and pull out the select cuts.&#160; Except for the liver and bacon, the meat of the whole hog is ground together to make a delicious sausage.&#160; Our sausage will bring a new excitement to your breakfast.&#160;&#160;&#160; <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Our pastured pork comes from Tamworth pigs.&#160; We chose the Tamworth breed for several reasons.&#160; Tamworth\u2019s are a heritage breed and we liked the idea of raising a breed from the past that had not been genetically \u201cimproved\u201d to do well in confinement.
